Prioritizing Dam safety with the MESL Emergency Dam Safety Management training with KGS of Canada.
Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited recently concluded phase II of its Emergency Dam Safety training to further strengthen emergency readiness and response capabilities. The training was facilitated by the KGS Group and brought together MESL staff from various departments, providing participants with practical knowledge and skills aimed at enhancing preparedness for potential emergency situations. Recent engagements within the sector have highlighted the need for dam owners to maintain robust safety frameworks that support routine operations, maintenance, risk management, and emergen.
Restoring Dignity, Rebuilding Lives: Mainstream Foundation’s Commitment to VVF Intervention in Nigeria
For many women living with Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF), accessing treatment is not only a medical challenge but also a painful social and emotional struggle marked by stigma, isolation, and loss of dignity. Mainstream Foundation’s intervention in VVF care began with the story of a woman who had suffered from the condition for several years and needed urgent surgery. Initially, efforts were made to secure treatment for her through a hospital referral to Sokoto State where one of the federal VVF hospitals are located. However, during the process, a conversation with Dr. Amina Bello-an obstetrician, gynaecologist, Founder of Raise Foundation, and former First Lady of Niger State-revealed that the surgery could be performed in Minna at a significantly lower cost. Rather than treating one patient, the same resources could support four women. This decision marked the beginning of Mainstream Foundation’s structured intervention in VVF care. By the end of the initiative in 2016, twenty women had successfully undergone restorative surgeries, while a ward at Kontagora general hospital was renovated to improve patient care. More importantly, the Foundation recognized the urgent need for a sustained and large-scale intervention, especially with Nigeria recording over 12,000 new VVF cases annually. Through a strategic partnership with Raise Foundation, Mainstream Foundation expanded its support to include the sponsorship of treatment and rehabilitation for women living with the condition. As interventions grew, another challenge became evident: many women avoided seeking help in general hospitals due to the stigma associated with VVF, particularly when forced to share hospital wards with other patients. VVF, also known as obstetric fistula, is a severe injury associated with prolonged and obstructed labour. Women affected often experience continuous leakage of urine or faeces, leading to isolation, emotional trauma, social exclusion, and economic hardship. To provide a more dignified and sustainable solution, Mainstream Foundation established the state-of-the-art Dr. Amina Bello Women Health Centre, located in Kontagora, Niger State. Commissioned in 2022 at a cost exceeding ₦500 million, the world-class facility provides specialized surgical and post-operative care for VVF patients amongst others. To date, Mainstream Foundation has sponsored over 355 successful obstetric fistula surgeries, spending nearly N200 million towards this intervention. Beyond treatment, the centre offers rehabilitation through vocational training and empowerment programmes that support patients’ reintegration into society. Today, the centre stands as a symbol of hope, restoration, and renewed dignity for vulnerable women across Nigeria. #worldfistuladay #herhealthisaright #investtoendfistulaandchildbirthinjuries For more news…
MESL Launches SCADA Academy To Stabilize Nigeria’s Power Grid Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited, MESL, operator of the Kainji, Jebba and Zungeru hydro power plants, has launched a sector-wide SCADA training program to improve grid stability and power delivery in Nigeria. The program will accelerate the integration of power generation companies, GenCos, into the national Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System, SCADA/EMS. The initiative supports compliance with Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission Order No. NERC/2024/057, which mandates grid-connected generating units to integrate with SCADA/EMS. Besides, it aligns with the Nigerian Independent System Operator, NISO’s June 2025 directive requiring real-time visibility and automated dispatch across the grid. “Integration of generation units into the national SCADA system is not optional. It is a critical operational and regulatory requirement for real-time monitoring, dispatch coordination and secure grid management,” said Engr. Abdu Mohammed Bello, Managing Director and CEO of NISO, at the training launch at Mainstream Academy in Kainji. He explained that the training builds technical capacity for GenCos to meet regulatory obligations while strengthening grid reliability and resilience. MESL is delivering the training through Mainstream Academy, its dedicated learning hub for power sector professionals. The curriculum covers SCADA architecture, remote terminal unit configuration, cybersecurity protocols and real-time data exchange with the National Control Centre. Olugbenga Adebola, MESL Head of Corporate Communications, said compliance with the directives will reduce system collapses, optimize load management and improve power delivery to Nigerians. Usman Muhammad Umar, Executive Director of Corporate Services and founder of the academy, said the program responds directly to regulatory directives aimed at improving grid visibility and coordination. “By equipping other GenCos with the skills and systems for full SCADA integration, we are supporting a smarter, more resilient national grid that can power Nigeria’s industrial aspirations,” Umar said. He urged all GenCos yet to comply with SCADA integration to act immediately, saying alignment with operational standards is essential for a stable and efficient power system.
